This is a map of the United Sates taken off of the Polaris Project site. The map shows the areas of human trafficking throughout the U.S. They get this information through their human trafficking hotline and reports. Slavery is still a large and serious problem in America, and it's happening right under our noses.

Slavery Never Ended

Picture
Slavery has been an issue for millennia. On Dec. 18, 1865, slavery "ended" in the United States. Secretary of State William Seward issued a statement verifying the ratification of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution making the end of slavery official eight months after the end of the Civil War. The amendments state: "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

Some may say, "slavery is no longer an issue." Wrong! There are more people enslaved today, than at any other point in history. According to polarisproject.org, there are an estimated 40 million people still in slavery around the world today, and the numbers keep rising.
Slavery generates $150 billion globally each year, making it one of the top criminal industries, next to drugs. The U.S. is one of the top three destinations for trafficked victims. Approximately 78% of victims are enslaved for labor, 22% of victims are enslaved for sex, 55% of slavery victims are women and girls. 26% of slaves today are children under the age of 18. The average age of children sold into slavery is 13. An estimated 60,000 victims of human trafficking are enslaved in the United States. India has the largest number of slavery victims at a horrifying 14 million. While statistics and facts vary from source to source, human trafficking is a very real, serious, and large problem in our world today.

Some victims are not just taken off the streets, they are set up with "job interviews" or offered well paying jobs in other countries, only to be forced to labor or sold to others as labor/sex slaves. Victims can also be born into human trafficking and never know what freedom is, or what it's like to live a normal life.

The statistics above are hard to swallow. It might seem, at this rate, that there will never be an end to human trafficking. Don't give up hope. YOU can make a difference. Become an abolitionist with us!

About

Here are 5 disguises to look out for in possible human traffickers, to stay safe:
  • Pretender -- Someone who pretends to be something s/he is not, such as a boyfriend, a big sister, a father, etc.
  • Provider -- Someone who offers to take care of an individual's needs, such as for clothes, food, a place to live, etc or their wants, like cool cell phones, purses, parties, etc.
  • Promiser -- Someone who promises access to great things, like an amazing job, a glamorous lifestyle, travel, etc.
  • Protector -- Someone who uses physical power or intimidation to protect (but also control) an individual.
  • Punisher -- Someone who uses violence and threats to control an individual. When the previous disguises have been exhausted, an exploitative person often becomes a Punisher to maintain control.

This video is very informative, and well spoken on how to spot human trafficking. Parents should preview prior to watching it with children.
